Zach Kline Taking Command of Cal Bears Quarterback Race in Spring Practice
The Cal Bears are in search of a new quarterback for 2013 under first year head coach Sonny Dykes. It’s been a heated battle that saw one contender, senior Allan Bridgford, leave the program, making it a heated three-way race for next fall. So far this spring, it looks like Zach Kline has taken a slight lead to win the starting job in 2013.
The redshirt freshman was a pretty highly regarded recruit when he came to Berkeley, but has been locked in a tight competition with freshman Jared Goff and junior Austin Hinder this spring with all three splitting reps. With just a couple of practices left this spring, Dykes has plenty to think about on all three options, but seems to be liking Kline just a little bit more.
“His reads are happening a little faster, seems like he’s a little more accurate on his mid-range throws than he was. I saw some of that in the scrimmage Saturday and it carried over to practice today.
“I think he’s improved and getting better and better. It’s good to see that.”
Kline was the only quarterback that Dykes singled out to the media following a practice session, though he did he liked what he was seeing from all three potential quarterbacks.
For Kline, he hasn’t received any indication that he’s making progress towards being named the starter, but his confidence in the offense is growing leaps and bounds every day. He seems to be settling in well as a leader on offense, feeling like the team is his now. Learning the new offense right alongside the other quarterbacks has leveled the playing field for the starting job despite his inexperience in game situations.
Nothing will likely be settled until fall camp, but Kline recognized the opportunity he has ahead of him and is working diligently to improve his game each and every day. If he can continue to play strong and make strides over the summer and into camp next August, expect Kline to come out on top of this quarterback competition.
