USC is expected to be a player in the recruitment for former Notre Dame receiver, Davonte’ Neal after he decided to transfer from the Fighting Irish after his freshman season to be closer to his home in Arizona where his girlfriend and baby reside.
Notre Dame was chosen over Arizona, but according to Richard Obert of AZCentral.com, the Wildcats don’t figure to be a landing spot for Neal one year later. The reason Obert cites is a falling out between Neal’s father and one of his former high school coaches, Charlie Ragle, who is now an assistant coach at Arizona.
That leaves Arizona State as a potential destination, but according to BlueGoldIllustrated.com’s Jason Sapp, who broke the story, Neal’s father Luke has other ideas in mind for his son.
“A school in California would most likely be a better fit for Davonte’ because of my relationships there and being from there,” Luke Neal said.
When you think of college football in California you immediately think of the Trojans — at least I do — and USC recruited him out of high school when he was a four-star recruit and the No. 7 ranked athlete according to 247Sports.com. Joe Berry was one of his primary recruiters, but he is no longer with the team after taking a job with the San Diego Chargers, so perhaps that door is closed, but it shouldn’t be.
Marqise Lee is all but a lock to leave for the NFL after this season when Neal will be sitting out as a result of transfer rules, but in 2014 could compete for a starting position alongside Nelson Agholor, George Farmer and Darreus Rogers.
Last season at Notre Dame, Neal was used primarily as the team’s punt returner and only recorded one catch for negative five yards. The 5-9, 170-pound receiver runs a 4.37 40-yard dash and would be a speedy weapon in the Trojans offense — if his dad lets him.
