The Kansas State Wildcats were very close to having a chance to play for a national championship last season. The 2013 season will begin in late August without the graduated Collin Klein. The Wildcats are still looking for Klein’s replacement, but I have a solution for them even if it means waiting until 2014 for it to happen. Gunner Kiel, who just left the Notre Dame program, is looking for a new college to play for. Kiel has been contacted by Kansas State, and I think the Wildcats need to step up their recruiting to make sure he goes there.
Kiel went to Notre Dame highly regarded before watching fellow freshman Everett Golson lead the Fighting Irish to the national title game. That led to Kiel deciding to look elsewhere and leaving Notre Dame. Kiel was one of the best quarterbacks in the country when he was in high school and committed to two other schools before going to Notre Dame. It’s obvious that Kiel has trouble making a long-term decision, but if the Wildcats can jump in and say that Kiel will be their starter beginning in 2014, I wouldn’t be surprised if he landed there.
I’m not sure how good Kansas State can be in 2013, but they can ensure that they are better in 2014 if they can get Kiel to come to town to stay. It’s going to be hard to do, obviously, but the allure of playing in the Big 12 should be something that appeals to Kiel. Kiel is supposed to decide by the end of the month, so it’s time for Kansas State to step up and make this happen.
