New Cincinnati Bearcats head coach Tommy Tuberville certainly didn’t waste any time asserting his influence on the football program, now did he? Earlier today, Tuberville secured the transfer of highly coveted ex-Notre Dame/ex-LSU/ex-Indiana QB Gunner Kiel.
In all seriousness, Tuberville made a huge splash today at his new home by landing the former top-tier passing prospect.
After watching the talented Everett Golson lead the Fighting Irish all the way to the BCS National Championship Game last season as a redshirt freshman, Kiel decided that maybe staying in South Bend wasn’t the best idea for his immediate future.
Putting aside the fact that Kiel has already changed his mind about committing to two schools previously, Indiana and LSU, it seems that he has chosen Cincinnati as the place to finally call home for his collegiate career.
But, how does this relationship all fit together?
For Tuberville and the Bearcats, this actually works out wonderfully. Cincinnati will enter the season with two senior quarterbacks in Munchie Legeaux and Brendon Kay. Normally, losing two experienced quarterbacks can be a back-breaker to a program. But while Kiel sits out this year due to the NCAA transfer rules set in place, he can still process the offensive system on his own. This will ease the burden of the Cincinnati coaching staff, as they will pretty much be entering 2014 with a built-in starter in place.
As for Kiel himself, as much as we criticize his prior movements, he may have made the appropriate decision here.
With Tommy Tuberville already stating that he plans to install a pro-style offense into the program, Kiel is basically the perfect fit. Even after he enrolled at Notre Dame, many people questioned whether or not he would be able to transition into Brian Kelly‘s spread system. It was reported throughout some practices that he indeed was having issues adjusting to the offense. Tuberville’s pro-style initiative will play to Kiel’s strengths much more.
Should this finally be the end of the Gunner Kiel soap-opera, then it does seem that everyone here made out in their own way. We’ll know more in another season, That is, if Kiel is still there. Or Tuberville, for that matter.
