Tim Beckman On the Head Coach Hot Seat With Illinois Fighting Illini
In a world of impatience, high expectations and little forgiveness, the Illinois Fighting Illini head coach Tim Beckman is at risk of losing his job. Now, Beckman has not been in Champaign for more than one season, but this Big 10 program can ill-afford to have another 2-10 record. Coming from the Toldeo Rockets, the head coach has a lot to prove considering his awful inaugural season.
With the Rockets, Beckman was a hot commodity in NCAAF as he was 16-9 during his last two years with the program, and concluded his tenure by bringing a share of the MAC title in 2011.
Beckman got off to a rocky start with the Rockets as his first season ended with an unimpressive 5-7 tally. The consensus in Champaign is that Beckman will do the same with the Illini, but another dead last finish and the head coaching job could be vacant before long.
At this point, the second-year coach is in a position where he has to wow the program in order to keep his job — this uncomfortable state won’t last long if the Illini get off to a hot start, but that is no guaranteed in this tough conference.
Quarterback play is always key to winning football games and with Nathan Scheelhaase and Reilly O’Toole gaining another year under their belt, the door of opportunity is wide open. If one of these guys can bust loose in 2013 then maybe Beckman can save his job, but there is little to no way I see the Illini bringing him back.
