Michael Holmes Could Be On His Way Out With Virginia Tech Hokies

Peter Casey-USA TODAY Sports

There are certain points where a college football program needs to make a difficult decision on one of their athletes. It appears the Virginia Tech Hokies are going to be at that point soon.

Michael Holmes is facing charges following a weekend fight and has been suspended indefinitely by the university. There is thankfully a university policy on this, but I would consider getting rid of Holmes now because they don’t need a black eye on the program like this.

Holmes rushed for 280 yards last season and four touchdowns while starting five games. There is expected to be a competition for the starting running back position, but these charges are going to take Holmes out of that race. There are plenty of details still to be released, but I don’t like the way this is going right now for Holmes. He was scheduled to be in court on Tuesday, but the school can’t take chances with things like this.

There are two counts of simple assault and a count of malicious wounding involved in this case. I really hope that Holmes has a good reason for getting involved in the fight. The Hokies would be better off in the long run if they just told Holmes that he is off the team if these charges turn out to be true. The team’s focus needs to be on the field instead of things off the field.
