Pittsburgh Panthers Indefinitely Suspend Three Members of Football Team

Charles LeClaire- USA TODAY Sports

Throughout recent years, the Pittsburgh Panthers football program has unquestionably had its share of setbacks. They’ve had newly-hired head coaches publicly embarrass them by being arrested on New Year’s Eve, resulting in immediate dismissal. They’ve had head coaches bolt for the sunny deserts of Arizona after coaching only one season in the Steel City, politely (not really) text messaging everyone his decision while he was departing on the plane. And recently, they’ve had their starting running back pick up and leave shortly into this past month’s spring drills.

As we all like to have our laughs at a lot of program’s shortcomings, we all had a lot of fun parodying these events at the expense of a team that was once, long ago, considered a national power.

However, the Panthers suffered yet another setback that they certainly didn’t need Friday. This one though really isn’t a laughing matter.

Head Coach Paul Chryst had to announce the indefinite suspensions Friday of three members of the Pitt football team.

Tight End Drew Carswell, defensive lineman Khaynin Mosley-Smith, and linebacker Eric Williams have officially each been put on their own little unwanted vacation. The three were arrested Thursday night following a SWAT raiding of a home they were in.

Now, while arrests among college football players have become alarmingly commonplace in today’s world, this particular incident is just a tad unique.

And by unique, I mean that the arrest report contains the phrase, “20 bags of heroin.” Oh, and there was also a marijuana bong and a copper grinder–which I have no clue as to what that even is–involved. All three will face drug paraphernalia charges upcoming.

All three arrests hold on the field significance. Williams and Mosley-Smith appeared in all 13 games last season and Carswell in 10. So, all three were expected to be contributors to the team, in this their first year as a member of the ACC.

It’s yet another unfortunate incident for a program that, at this point, is searching for anything positive to hold on to.
