Would Wes Lunt Fit at Georgia?
Although he ended spring practice as the co-starter at quarterback on the Oklahoma State Cowboys‘ depth chart, Wes Lunt announced Thursday afternoon that he’s transferring to another school. While it’s tough to know where he might land, Lunt would be an excellent fit under center for the Georgia Bulldogs.
Let’s be honest: the addition of an experienced signal caller would really help the Dawgs in 2014 when Aaron Murray graduates. Given the highly competitive nature of the SEC East, UGA can’t afford to have another quarterback learn on the job. It needs someone who can hit the ground running and pick up exactly where Murray left off.
That’s where Lunt comes in.
Make no mistake about it: Lunt is a gifted pro-style quarterback with exceptional arm strength and pinpoint accuracy. Enrolling early as a true freshman, Lunt won the starting job at the end of spring practice last year over Clint Chelf and JW Walsh. Although injuries hampered him throughout the year, Lunt had a solid season, completing 81-of-131 passes for 1,108 yards and 6 TDs.
That’s not a bad showing considering that he only played the entire game twice last season.
His arrival in Athens would instantly make the Bulldogs better under center. Sure, he’d have to compete with Hutson Mason to take over as the starter next season, but the competition would ultimately help both of them improve. Even if he fails to win the job — a big if considering that he became the first true freshman to start a season opener at Oklahoma State since at least 1950 — Lunt would have two full seasons of eligibility remaining, giving him ample opportunity to compete against the best defenses in the land.
It’ll be interesting to see if Georgia is one of the schools that he considers.
