Quarterback Wes Lunt Logical Fit for Louisville Cardinals

Matt Kartozian – USA TODAY Sports

The saga of Wes Lunt and his transfer from the Oklahoma State Cowboys trudges on. After announcing several schools that he was interested in checking out, his list has been pared down by the transfer restrictions placed on him by his now-former program. As it stands, the young quarterback has narrowed his search down to the Illinois Fighting Illini, Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Louisville Cardinals. Of all his options, however, his best fit may be with Charlie Strong and the Cardinals.

Louisville is a program on the rise under Strong as they prepare to make the move to the ACC in 2014. When they transition out of the Big East, they could be looking for a new quarterback. Teddy Bridgewater has built up a ton of momentum from his 2012 campaign and could parlay that into a top five NFL Draft selection next offseason with another strong season in 2013. If he decides to give up his senior season with Louisville, there would be an opening under center that Lunt would slide into quite nicely.

While the Cardinals don’t run a true spread like Lunt played while at Oklahoma State, Strong does have a previous relationship with the quarterback from the recruiting trail. Lunt is a strong-armed and accurate quarterback who would fit very well in the Louisville offense and provide a playmaker under center that would keep the passing game rolling even after Bridgewater moved on to the NFL. After sitting out the 2013 season because of transfer rules, Lunt would have three years as the starter for a Louisville program that has built an excellent foundation for continued success.

In addition, many believe that the leading motivation for Lunt to transfer from Oklahoma State was a desire to be closer to his Rochester, Illinois, home. That desire has made the Illini a strong contender for his services, but Louisville is the next closest option and provides a stronger team around him to build some success. Louisville just makes the best fit for Lunt if he wants to win and play closer to home.

While it may be the logical choice, is Louisville where Lunt will ultimately end up?
