The Oregon Ducks have built a reputation as one of the premier offensive programs in the country. But the Ducks’ defense has been underrated as well with playmakers coming up with big plays in big moments when the team seems to need them the most. In 2013, they will need to rely on that big-play ability yet again and safety Erick Dargan will be that playmaker.

While the secondary is led by corner Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, it was Dargan who led the team last season with five interceptions. He was a key playmaker with the ability to keep a lid on the Oregon defense by roaming the deep center and will be tasked with doing it once again in 2013. The junior will look to take his game to the next level and beome one of the premier safeties in college football.

With the way that Oregon’s offense runs at full-speed at all times, it puts the defense onto the field more often than most other teams. That makes it all the more important for the defense to have players on the field who can create negative plays and turnovers, not only to get the Ducks’ defense off the field and keep them fresh, but also to get more snaps for their offense. More snaps for this offense will undoubtedly turn into more points.

While Dargan may not be the most prominent name on the Oregon team or defense or even the secondary, his playmaking ability will be absolutely critical to the success of Mark Helfrich‘s first year as head coach and how far Oregon can go in the Pac 12 next season.
