Georgia Tech Beefs Up Secondary with Stepheny Durham Commitment
While initially a decision wasn’t expected to be made until the end of June, three-star (according to 247Sports) CB and Jacksonville, Florida native CB Stepheny Durham took one last trip to visit the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Saturday. Following the visit, the decision in his mind between the Ramblin’ Wreck and the Vanderbilt Commodores had come to a clear-cut conclusion.
Atlanta is where he wants to take the next step in his football career.
Per his father, Durham gave the Yellow Jackets his verbal commitment for the 2014 class. The decision had been down to GT and Vanderbilt–whom he visited back on June 1–for quite some time now, and was supposed to take a little longer to reach a conclusion. However, evidently on Saturday he had seen all he had to see to make his mind up earlier.
Durham, a 5-11 185-pound corner, has been impressed with not only Georgia Tech’s academic prowess, but his future coaching staff as well–mainly his new defensive coordinator Ted Roof. Roof was able to use his fiery passion for the game enough to catch the attention of Durham. This is yet another one of the off-the-field reasons as to why Roof was such a good hire for Johnson.
Throughout the recruiting process, Durham and his camp have made it no secret that he will be an early-enrollee at whichever school he did choose to attend. So it seems as if GT can expect Durham on campus and ready to work next spring, which is always a good sign.
Overall, Durham is a solid cornerback. Tackling and cover skills off the line-of-scrimmage are impressive, as well as his cutting ability. The only area that may need some work is his downfield coverage on deep routes. If there’s any area that needs development, it’s that.
Still, a great catch for Paul Johnson and the Jackets as they look to build a powerful defense under Roof.
