The Iowa State Cyclones went 6-7 in 2012 including a loss to end their season in the Liberty Bowl. The 2013 season is just over two months away and the team is going to miss the leadership of Steele Jantz when this year begins. The team will be going with Sam Richardson as their quarterback, but there was just something about Jantz, however, that the team will be missing.

Jantz threw for 1,603 yards, 13 touchdowns and 12 interceptions during the 2012 season. Those may not be the best numbers, but he was productive especially while completing 62 percent of his passes. Richardson was solid, completing 58 percent of his passes, but he will only be a sophomore this coming season and wasn’t able to lead the team to a win in the bowl game last year. We will have to see where Richardson can take this Cyclones team in 2013, but there won’t be the same experience under center anymore.

The schedule isn’t easy and even if the Cyclones can win their first two games at home against in-state rivals, they will be hard-pressed to find four more wins. The talent in the Big 12 is just too good and it is going to be an uphill battle. I don’t think Iowa State will be going back to the postseason. I have been wrong before and this could easily be one of those cases, but I feel pretty confident about this. The loss of Jantz is going to be a bigger deal than a lot of people will realize now and when the team is 4-8 or 5-7 in December, they will be missing him a lot.
