Kerry Hyder Bringing the Pressure for Texas Tech Red Raiders in 2013
As Kliff Kingsbury takes over his alma mater, the Texas Tech Red Raiders are hoping to make noise in the Big 12. While everyone is expecting big things out of their offense, it might be the defense that is the key for their resurgence. If the defense is going to rise up next season and take the Raiders back to their glory days, it will be Kerry Hyder bringing the pressure that drives them there.
Hyder returns for his senior season after leading the Raiders in 2012 with 14 tackles for loss and sharing the team lead with 5.5 sacks. The defensive end will pair with Dartwan Bush, who also had 5.5 sacks in 2012, as a pass-rushing force in the up-tempo Big 12 next season. They will need to take the pressure up to a new level next fall to disrupt opposing offenses and get their high-powered offense back onto the field.
The 6-foot-2, 281-pound senior is a big, strong, disruptive force off the edge and will look to build on his strong Big 12 performance. His exploits were rewarded with All-Big 12 honors in 2012 (first-team by the media, second-team by coaches). He has worked his way onto NFL scouts’ radars and could become one of the early names to get called in the 2014 NFL draft with another strong season in 2013.
Texas Tech may never be known as an elite defensive program, but they may have one of the better pass rushing duos in college football, led by Hyder. The Raiders have high hopes for the Kingsbury era and having Hyder coming off the edge will be a major boost for getting things started well in 2013.
