Texas A&M Must Do All They Can To Keep Johnny Manziel Happy

Soobum Im-USA TODAY Sports

Texas A&M enters the 2013 college football season with extremely high expectations and will look to contend in the always-tough SEC. Much of the hype surrounds the Aggies is due in large part to the return of reigning Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel for his second season as A&M’s starting quarterback.

However, Manziel made headlines when he sent out tweets last week saying he couldn’t wait to leave College Station, whenever that may be. Despite later claiming he still loved playing for A&M, news later broke that Manziel was seriously considering transferring to another school.

Entering the 2013 season, many speculate that a successful follow-up season will make Manziel’s departure come sooner than later. However, no one predicted that there was a chance of it happening this soon. The Aggies must do all they can to keep their star quarterback happy. Manziel’s tremendous season not only helped him capture numerous awards, but also dramatically improved the Aggies as a team.

Having little expectations entering their inaugural SEC season, A&M surprised many with an 11-2 record under first-year coach Kevin Sumlin and a redshirt freshman starting quarterback.

Manziel took on the role of David to eventual national champion Alabama‘s Goliath, handing the Tide their lone loss of the season. From then on, the hype surrounding the great “Johnny Football” took the nation by storm.

Following his Heisman Trophy victory in December 2012, Manziel kicked off the new year by leading the Aggies to a successful Cotton Bowl victory over former Big-12 rival Oklahoma. However, the polarizing quarterback has had an offseason full of negativity.

Manziel has gained attention for his use of social media, attitude and maturity concerns. But the biggest threat Aggies fans faced with Manziel was his threat of a departure.

The Aggies must do all they can to keep Manziel happy for his assumed final collegiate season. He is the heart and soul of the Aggies football team and has done more good on the field than bad off.

Keeping their star player satisfied will be the most important factor to a successful 2013 season.
