In eight seasons under the watch of head coach Bronco Mendenhall, the BYU Cougars have been one of the more consistent programs in the country. They’ve compiled a 74-29 record, found themselves in a bowl game every single postseason and even have made the move to becoming an independent entity. Life hasn’t been bad by any means in Provo with Mendenhall at the helm.

On Wednesday, the coach was rewarded for his efforts.

BYU officials announced Wednesday that they were able to come to terms with their coach on a contract extension that will carry him through the 2016 season. Mendenhall’s original contract was set to expire at the end of this upcoming season, so getting this deal finalized right now eliminates any sort of upcoming distractions. And, with such a daunting upcoming 2013 schedule with games against the Texas Longhorns, Boise State Broncos and Notre Dame Fighting Irish–among others, distractions are the last thing the Cougars need.

Mendenhall certainly seems as if he is doing all that he can do bring this program back to national prominence. Before he was promoted in 2005 from defensive coordinator, the Cougars were 14-21 in three seasons under then head coach Gary Crowton. When Crowton left, Mendenhall immediately let everyone involved with the program know his intentions of making BYU a national staple once again. And, so far, he’s succeeding.

Although the schedule is a bit rugged, the Cougars are expected to surprise quite a few this year. After capping an 8-5 season last year with a lopsided Poinsettia Bowl victory over San Diego State, and with a lot of those starters returning including QB Taysom Hill and stud LB Kyle Van Noy, Mendenhall and his squad could have a BCS opportunity in their future.

However it does turn out though, at least they know they have a coach that isn’t going anywhere, anytime soon.
