Derrick Green is the Next Great Michigan Running back
Mike Hart, Tyrone Wheatley, Anthony Thomas and Chris Perry are just a few of the prolific running backs to dawn the winged-helmet. Each of those backs are remembered in Michigan‘s history as top 10 rushers and top 10 rushing touchdown leaders. Despite Michigan’s obvious success at recruiting the running back position, their best running back has yet to see the field, and his name is Derrick Green.
Derrick Green has never played a down in the college level, but the five star recruit and arguably top RB in the nation is destined to do spectacular things in the maize and blue. Throughout his career at Hermitage High School (VA), Green recorded over 3,500 yards and 50 touchdowns on the ground.
The blue-chipper was a first-team all-region as a high school sophomore. As his prep career progressed, Green racked up first-team All Metro, All-State underclassmen in Virginia, Colonial District Offensive Player of the Year and U.S. Army All-American honors. He was rated the fourth best running back in the nation according to 247sports composite–a national index that takes into account Scout.com, 247sports.com, Rivals.com and Espn.com’s recruiting rankings.
As a running back, Green brings many great attributes to the table. His 6-foot-0, 220 pound frame gives him the ability to run over defenders, but his 4.4 speed allows him to go outside, along with between the tackles. His high school film shows his invaluable vision and football IQ. With everything he offers as a rusher, Green can easily beat out senior Fitzgerald Toussaint, who’s coming off a season ending ACL injury, and play as a true freshman. Green will need the early playing time to better his chances of breaking records in Ann Arbor.
Green clearly has everything you want in a running back. His style of play fits Michigan’s scheme and will give him the opportunity to shine in the Big Ten. It’s a far from easy task, but Green has the chance to be the best running back who has ever “touched the banner.”
