The SEC Media Days will take place this week and many eyes will be focused on Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel. Manziel is the reigning Heisman Trophy winner and the first freshman in college football history to win the award.
Following a stellar season in which he led his Aggies to an impressive 11-2 record and a Cotton Bowl victory over former Big 12 conference rival Oklahoma, Manziel gained just as much attention for his off the field antics during the offseason.
Most of Manziel’s actions have have earned him a reputation of “immature” by many who follow college football. The most recent occurrence came after an early dismissal from the 2013 Manning Passing Camp after he allegedly showed up late and was hungover from a night of partying.
This will likely add to the media storm his attendance will create, as Manziel and Texas A&M have both confirmed that he will participate in interviews on Wednesday at the Hoover, Ala., event.
Manziel was limited to the media as Texas A&M had a standard policy against allowing freshmen players to participate in interviews until after the regular season. Since the lift of his ban, added to his use of social media, Manziel has become an outspoken figure and the forefront of the college football offseason.
His first SEC Media Day as the face of Texas A&M football should be no different. With the exception of South Carolina‘s Jadeveon Clowney, regarded by many to be next year’s No.1 NFL Draft pick, Manziel will be the most highly demanded player amongst the SEC media.
There are many past altercations that will add to intrigue of Manziel’s media day appearance, and a positive, mature showing will likely do wonders for not only his future draft stock, but also his reputation amongst college football fans and media.
