Florida State Lands Another Top-Rated Prospect in DT Dexter Wideman

Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports

The Florida State Seminoles continued their whirlwind recruiting surge Monday by landing yet another four-star rated (according to 247Sports) prospect to their already impressive 2014 recruiting class–and this one not many saw coming.

Dexter Wideman, a defensive tackle out of the state of South Carolina, made his commitment to Florida State official late Monday night in a move that may have shocked some experts. If you were to look back at the history of predictions on 247, the consensus was that he would stay in-state and attend South Carolina, which was perfectly understandable to believe.

But as we usually learn in the recruiting process, nothing really ever is a sure thing and Wideman proved that by throwing those experts a curveball just before midnight.

In making this announcement, Wideman becomes the 22nd commitment for head coach Jimbo Fisher and this already stacked 2014 class. As of right now on 247, the ‘Noles possess the 2nd-ranked recruiting class in the country, just behind the equally dominant Tennessee Volunteers.

As far as the pickup of Wideman goes, Florida State is getting quite the explosive player on the defensive line. At 6-4 and 255-pounds, he’s extremely athletic on the inside and has that quick reaction off the snap that coaches look for. I’d expect him to throw on a little more weight before he becomes a dominant force on the defensive line for FSU, so it’ll be interesting to see if he can keep that athleticism at a high-level. However there is no doubt that defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt has to see this young man as someone that he can turn into a true defensive anchor down the road.

Wideman was on the Tallahassee campus last Wednesday and had an extensive tour of the facilities as well as meetings with the coaching staff. It seems as if much caught his eye last week, causing him to send the recruiting world into a frenzy tonight.
