Florida Gators’ Will Muschamp: The Man Behind the Boom

Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

Will “Coach Boom” Muschamp has been a name in football for last couple decades. Whether it was as a player or as a coach, in college football or the NFL, he has a logged quite a bit of experience in the industry.

Born in Rome, Georgia, but raised in Gainesville, Florida, Muschamp got his college football start in 1991 as a safety at the University of Georgia. Ironic, I know. After graduating from UGA, Muschamp went on to serve as the defensive coordinator for the Auburn Tigers, Valdosta State Blazers, the LSU Tigers, and the Texas Longhorns. He also spent a year as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins.

Muschamp became well-known for his expertise on defense. As a member of the coaching staff for the Dolphins, Muschamp’s unit ranked second in the NFL with 49 sacks. In 2007, his second season at Auburn, he was a finalist for the Broyles Award for most outstanding assistant head coach. In his time spent with the Longhorns, Muschamp was designated as the “head coach in waiting”. He was expected to succeed current Longhorns head coach Mack Brown prior to accepting the job at Florida.

Shortly after becoming Florida’s head coach, Muschamp’s nickname Coach Boom became more widely known. The name stems from a moment at Auburn when an ESPN mic recorded Muschamp yelling “BOOM” while celebrating a big play. Nowadays, the moniker takes on a different meaning. The name embodies Muschamp’s passionate, fiery demeanor on the sidelines during games. Something many Gator fans find exciting and entertaining. I know I do.

We now know a little something about the man behind the name. I personally can’t wait for more Coach Boom moments.
