While fans of the Auburn Tigers have visions of Cam Newton dancing in their heads, they need to realize one thing: There’s really only one Cam Newton.

The Auburn faithful are holding out hope that their new quarterback, Nick Marshall, can follow in Newton’s footsteps. After all, the last time Auburn signed a dual-threat quarterback out of a junior college, that quarterback won the Heisman Trophy and led the Tigers to the BCS National Championship.

On Saturday, new Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn said that Marshall had won the job, and the speculation about how good Marshall can be was dancing in the heads of Auburn fans. After all, Malzahn was the offensive coordinator when Newton was the quarterback at Auburn. Surely Malzahn can work the same type of magic with Marshall that he did with Newton.

Marshall won the job over returning starters Kiehl Frazier (who is now a defensive back on the team) and Jonathan Wallace, who both started games last season. True freshman Jeremy Johnson was also in the competition, but he lost out to Marshall as well.

Last season, at Garden City (Kan.) Community College, Marshall passed for 3,142 yards and 18 touchdowns, while rushing for 1,095 yards and 19 scores. No wonder Auburn fans are hoping for the second coming of Newton.

Auburn is still in the initial stages of rebuilding, so it remains to be seen what Marshall can accomplish with the talent around him. The Auburn faithful should also be patient with Marshall, and Malzahn, because there really is only one Cam Newton.
