Sam Houston State vs. Texas A&M: Game Preview With TV Schedule

Texas A&M

Thomas Campbell-USA TODAY Sports

The Texas A&M Aggies made some headlines last week for what they did on and off the field. Johnny Manziel was benched for the first half of the game because of a school-proposed suspension, limiting his time to just a half of play. Head coach Kevin Sumlin disciplined the young Heisman-winner once he started talking trash to the Rice Owls and after he picked up an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

On the other side of the field, the Sam Houston State Bearkats are coming off a huge week one victory over Houston Baptist, 74-0. The score of the game was a bit deceiving because the Bearkats’ offense didn’t exactly set the world on fire, it was the defense that dominated. Don’t be surprised in the Aggies shut down SHSU, though.

The Aggies’ offense racked up nearly 500 total yards while scoring 52 points against Rice. Matt Joeckel was the leading passer, completing 14 of 19 passes for 190 yards and a score — proving that the Aggies would be fine without Johnny Football. Mike Evans was on the receiving end of two touchdowns and finished with 84 yards on six catches.

Sam Houston State is one of those FCS schools that could make a splash in 2013, but facing the Aggies does not bode well for the Bearkats. The pass offense is not very solid as it finished with just 90 yards through the air, but rushing for over 350 yards is no joke. Oh, and scoring 74 points isn’t too shabby, either.

Texas A&M’s defense was poor to say the least against the Owls in week one. It allowed over 500 yards of offense to Rice and let the Owls hold the ball for 17 minutes longer than its own offense. Sam Houston State allowed just 90 yards, but the competition wasn’t solid enough to call them lock-down.

The Bearkats will travel to Texas A&M to take on the Aggies at 7 p.m. EST on Saturday, Sept. 7. The game will be aired on ESPN 3.

PREDICTION: Sam Houston State 10, Texas A&M 42
