One Heisman Trophy hopeful made his case on Saturday, but it was not Jadeveon Clowney. Instead, Aaron Murray is the guy who took the college football world by storm and did so by doing something that most fans thought he couldn’t accomplish: win a big-time game against a ranked opponent.

Murray has been overshadowed by two-time BCS Champion A.J. McCarron for each of the last three seasons, but the Georgia Bulldogs‘ quarterback took a firm grasp of the national spotlight on Saturday. The South Carolina Gamecocks headed into Georgia as the favorites, but left with nothing but a big “L”. The highly-revered Clowney was supposed to wreak havoc on a usually gun-shy Murray, yet that was hardly the case.

Senior quarterbacks like Murray are looked to for leadership, so when the Bulldogs were tied heading into halftime the whole state of Georgia turned to No. 11. Answering the call, Murray tossed two second-half touchdowns and forced the Gamecocks’ offense to play from behind. An 85-yard touchdown pass to Justin Scott-Wesley took the wind right out of South Carolina’s sails and that is the kind of big-time play that critics claimed Murray was unable to make.

It’s premature to call Murray the Heisman Trophy favorite, but the way he held his ground against a daring Gamecocks’ defensive line should not go unnoticed. As a matter of fact, this is the kind of game that puts the entire country on “Murray watch.”
