Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders Could Win Conference USA in First Season

Liz Condo-USA TODAY Sports

The Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders were defeated 40–20 by the much stronger North Carolina Tar Heels. North Carolina jumped up to a 23-0 lead early in the game, but crucial interceptions killed MTSU’s scoring chances during that scoreless stretch.

Logan Kilgore had a terrible game – probably the worst he has ever had.  He will get better as the season progresses, because UNC has one of the best defensive lines of any team MTSU plays all season long. The UNC defense pressured him the entire game and caused him to make some bad decisions with the football.

MTSU can win Conference USA in their first season as members. Jordan Parker put up 100 yards on an ACC defense; imagine what he can do to some of the shoddy C-USA defenses.

UNC is a mid-level ACC team that should be able to win an upset game against the Florida State Seminoles, the Virginia Tech Hokies or the Miami Hurricanes; therefore, MTSU should not look at this game as a failure. The Blue Raiders should be glad that they got a bad game from their senior quarterback in a game against a team with a majority of better talent instead of a crucial conference clash.

The Blue Raiders cannot get their heads down after a tough loss on the road to UNC, because they have an opportunity this year to really put themselves on the map as a legitimate NCAA team. MTSU has can redeem itself in the game against BYU in three weeks and the Cougars should see this Middle Tennessee team as a threat.
