South Carolina Defense Looked Angry Last Week

The South Carolina Gamecocks‘ defense got tangled up against Georgia‘s prolific offense last Saturday, and that includes their defensive coaches as well.

After a three-and-out in the third quarter of the South Carolina-Georgia game on Saturday, ESPN cameras caught Gamecocks linebackers coach Kirk Botkin and defensive line coach Deke Adams getting into a shoving match on the South Carolina sideline.

Botkin started shouting into Adams’ face and Adams put a forearm into Botkin’s chest trying to get him off, and the two eventually had to be restrained by defensive coordinator, Lorenzo Ward and junior safety Brison Williams who was coming off of the field.

This shouldn’t surprise anyone around the game. Especially after their performance in that 41-30 loss on Saturday.

Steve Spurrier‘s dominant Gamecock defense was shredded in the air by Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray, who threw for 309 yards and four touchdowns — two being very disappointing and key third-down touchdowns after avoiding excessive pressure in the pocket from the Gamecocks defensive front. The Bulldogs offense was also excellent on the ground with 207 yards over 53 carries led by the sophomore duo of Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall. The Bulldogs finished with 536 yards for the game and ate up the remaining eight minutes of the game with a 13-play, 80-yard drive. The most surrendered by a South Carolina defense since 2007 when Arkansas put up 651 against Spurrier and the Gamecocks in Fayetteville.

Although this game was played early in the campaign, it was a big swing for the SEC East crown this season. With a lot on the line, it was not surprising to see tempers flare in the heat of the moment on Saturday.

For a defense that came into this season with all the hype surrounding their defensive end, best football player in the nation, Jadeveon Clowney, it’s time to put up or shut up as they host Vanderbilt this weekend in Colombia.
