Texas A&M Quarterback Johnny Manziel is Undraftable

Some reports have surfaced recently claiming that some NFL teams believe that Johnny Manziel is an undraftable player. While he isn’t draft eligible until after the 2014 season, the talks about if he will make it as a professional quarterback have been all the rage lately. However, is Johnny Football going to be Johnny NFL one day?

All signs point to yes right now. The sophomore quarterback and reigning Heisman winner has all the tools to succeed — in college. It’s hard to say that he will be anything other than a superstar college quarterback just like Tim Tebow was in his time with the Florida Gators. However the quarterback is listed at a very generous 6-foot-1 and 210 pounds, a bit small to be playing quarterback in the NFL. The typical pro quarterback is between 6-foot-3 and 6-foot-5 and weighing in at around 220 pounds.

Height and weight are the least of Manziel’s worries come draft day. Even his talent is through the roof, but it’s what he’s done off the field that will scare teams away. Many teams in the league are very weary of drafting a young player with off-field issues — main example of this is Vontaze Burfict. That is exactly what Manziel is.

Sure, his size might hold him back a bit from getting drafted in the early rounds, but his attitude problems might keep him from hearing his name at all on draft weekend — at least by the commissioner.

He proved to have all the talent in the world by making an unbelievable comeback bid for his Texas A&M Aggies against the Alabama Crimson Tide last weekend, but his 2013 offseason was one of the worst by an athlete in recent memory — besides Titus Young.

However, he does have a year to grow up in the mental department and bulk up a bit, physically. Do I think he’s going to be draftable even then? Maybe a fourth-round pick.
