ACC Has Impressive Showing in Latest AP Poll
For a conference that received little respect in the preseason AP Poll, the ACC has really turned things around in a matter of weeks.
The latest poll that came out Sunday not only had three ACC teams in the top 15, but also six in the top 33.
The Clemson Tigers avoided the Thursday night road game trap that has claimed so many contenders from the ACC in past years by beating NC State. They remain the third ranked team in the country and appear to be headed for a showdown with the eighth ranked team in the country, Florida State.
The Noles had what amounted to a walk-through against Bethune-Cookman on Saturday and shouldn’t face much of a test this weekend when they travel to Boston College. They should cruise into October 19 meeting with Clemson undefeated, setting up an epic ACC battle.
Finally, the conference has three teams that are on the verge of cracking the top 25. The aforementioned Yellow Jackets took care of business against a tough North Carolina team and sit two spots out of the rankings. Surprisingly, Maryland is off to a 4-0 start and are also closing in on a spot in the top 25. However, they travel to Tallahassee soon and will be huge underdogs against the Seminoles. Lastly, Virginia Tech received votes in the AP Poll, despite losing their season opener.
Not much was expected for the ACC when the season began in August, but early results have shown the strength of the conference.
