Tennessee Volunteers Football: Rajion Neal Shows Signs of Life against South Alabama
The Tennessee Volunteers went into their fourth game of the season with the seemingly easy task of defeating the South Alabama Jaguars from the Sun Belt conference. They won 31 – 24 after a late push by the Jaguars almost resulted in an upset.
Despite the scare, there is some good news for the Volunteers. Running back Rajion Neal rushed for 169 yards, Neal’s first 100+ yard rushing performance since the season opener against FCS opponents Austin Peay.
Tennessee was expected to rely heavily on Neal’s veteran running ability this season, and his lack of production is one of the reasons their offense has struggled so much. If he can get going, Tennessee may have a chance at going to a bowl game.
The Volunteers may be struggling offensively this year, but their defense looks really good. If the Vols can get their run game going to get the defense off the field and give their talented defense a break, they might be able to make it to six wins and a bowl game.
Tennessee should already be 4 – 1. They had every opportunity to win the game against the Florida Gators, but offensive mistakes and the mistake by Butch Jones of starting Nathan Peterman at quarterback instead of Justin Worley cost them dearly. However, 3 – 2 is not a bad record to have for a rebuilding team.
The next few games will be rough for Tennessee with games against the South Carolina Gamecocks, the Georgia Bulldogs and the Alabama Crimson Tide; however, don’t give up, Tennessee fans. Head coach Jones knows what he’s doing and the Vols should get back to winning within the next two years.
