There should be no question as to why quarterback Braxton Miller is the Ohio State Buckeyes‘ No. 1 quarterback. However, the performances that backup quarterback Kenny Guiton had the past few games as he took over for the injured Miller were nothing short of impressive and raised some questions coming into Saturday’s game as to who should start for the Buckeyes. Many also thought Miller would be rusty and out of sync with the offense. Miller was ultimately named the starter as he returned from injury on Saturday when the Buckeyes took on the Wisconsin Badgers in a Big Ten showdown in Columbus, and he proved to everyone why there never should have been a doubt who the Buckeyes’ starting quarterback would be against the Badgers.
Now, do not misunderstand. This is not to take anything away from Guiton because he is a good quarterback, and the Buckeyes should feel good knowing that they have him should Miller suffer another injury this season. But Miller is Heisman-caliber and a better all-around quarterback than Guiton.
The proof lies in the statistics that Miller put up against a good Wisconsin team that could potentially be the second-best team in the Big Ten behind the Buckeyes. The scoring started early, as Miller struck less than five minutes into the game with a 25-yard touchdown pass to receiver Evan Spencer. Miller did not stop there, as he continued to put up good numbers the rest of the game in both passing and rushing. He was 17-for-25 with 198 yards and four touchdown passes, while carrying the ball 22 times for 83 yards. Ohio State never trailed Wisconsin, as they came out with a 31-24 victory over the upset-minded Badgers. The Badgers played well, but they crushed their hopes of an upset with a defense that was unable to stop Miller, penalties, and several other costly mistakes.
Miller not only proved why he should be the starting quarterback for the Buckeyes, but also that he is a great all-around, Heisman-caliber quarterback. He helped to show why he is considered to be the Big Ten’s best player on a team that is the best in the conference and a team that will no doubt be a contender for this year’s BCS title game. There is no question that Miller is and will continue to be an important part of the Buckeyes’ BCS title hopes this season.
