Vanderbilt Commodores: What We Learned In Week 5, What To Look For In Week 6
We aren’t sure if Vanderbilt (3-2, 0-2) head coach James Franklin is interested in the vacancy at USC, but we do know he’s not interested in talking about it. When asked about the job, he had this to say:
“My response is (I’m) really excited about talking about UAB, our last game; really excited about talking about Missouri this week,” Franklin said. “I mean, for once I’d like to sit in this press conference and talk about either the game before or the game we’re playing this week.”
And why wouldn’t he? His team is gaining momentum and has a huge conference game coming up.
The offense is only getting better, and wide receiver Jordan Matthews is getting closer and closer to breaking SEC records for career receiving yards and career receptions. With eight catches for 115 yards and a touchdown in Vandy’s 52-24 win over UAB, Matthews has had 100-plus yards or a touchdown in four of Vandy’s five games. In the process, he tied a Vanderbilt record with his 21st-career touchdown reception.
Running back Jerron Seymour had a big game on the ground, rushing for 107 yards and two touchdowns on just 12 carries. Also, quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels completed 23-of-29 passes for a career-high 334 yards and accounted for three touchdowns.
The Commodores are syncing offensively, but will the improvement be enough to keep up with the high-scoring Missouri Tigers?
What to look for in Week 6: The same thing as Missouri: Can the Commodores win in the SEC? So far, Vandy is unbeaten outside the league (3-0) and winless in league play (0-2). The Commodores beat the Tigers 19-15 last season, but this year’s meeting figures to have a much higher point total. Which James Franklin will emerge victorious this time around?
