Andre Maloney

It was a tough weekend for family and friends of Shawnee Mission West High School star wide receiver Andre Maloney. The 17-year-old standout collapsed on the sidelines just minutes after scoring a touchdown last Thursday night and was taken to the hospital immediately via ambulance.

Surely it was a scary moment for everyone who witnessed his collapse and I’m sure no one thought it would as serious as it ultimately ended up being, but the young star passed away the next day at the hospital. The kid was a fan favorite and seemed to be everyone’s friend. Oh yeah, and he was a star recruit, committing to the Kansas Jayhawks to play football in the fall of 2014.

According to the wide receiver’s cousin, doctor’s could not remove the blood clot that they discovered in Maloney’s brain during surgery, ultimately leading to the unexpected death of the seemingly healthy football player.

Charlie Weis, the Jayhawks’ head coach, expressed his condolences for the commit’s family and friends after hearing about the loss. It was a classy move for the veteran Kansas coach.

It was clear that this kid was special and even Weis saw that in the short time that he had the pleasure of knowing the young man.

Always tough to hear about the unexpected passing of a kid with such a bright future. Thoughts are with his family and friends.
