Pittsburgh vs. Virginia Tech: Game Preview With TV Schedule
The new-t0-the-rankings Virginia Tech Hokies come into week seven ranked No. 24 in the nation and after a tough blowout loss in week one against the Alabama Crimson Tide and poor play from the quarterback position, not many thought this would be possible. Five straight wins, including two ACC victories, will get you in the top-25.
On the other side of the field, the Pittsburgh Panthers have come on strongly after being blown out by the Florida State Seminoles in week one. The Panthers are 3-1 on the relatively young season. This team could give Virginia Tech and the Miami Hurricanes a run for their money in the ACC Coastal division.
Virginia Tech was hoping for more production from the quarterback position after Logan Thomas‘ poor junior season in 2012. Thomas has improved a bit in 2013, passing for 1,212 yards and eight touchdowns along with three rushing scores, but his interception problem has remained an issue. Running back Trey Edmunds has led the rushing attack with 98 carries for 380 yards and four scores, but this offense has not been overly impressive through six weeks.
Pittsburgh ranks 43rd in the nation in passing yards per game thanks to quarterback Tom Savage who has passed for 1,052 yards and 10 touchdowns through four games. However, his six interceptions through those four games has led to some opponents’ scoring opportunities. Devin Street and Tyler Boyd both have led the receiving attack, combining to account for nearly all of the passing yards on Savage’s season. They have 44 catches for 870 yards and seven touchdowns on the season combined.
Defensively, Virginia Tech has one of the best units in the nation, ranking fifth in points allowed per game while ranking 12th in the nation with just 16 points allowed per game. Pittsburgh has not been as impressive this season, allowing 380 yards per game — 54th in the nation — and 31.5 points per game — 91st in the nation.
Pittsburgh will travel to Virginia Tech to take on the Hokies at 12 p.m. EST on Saturday, Oct. 12. The game will be broadcasted on ESPNU.
