Division I College Football Conferences Ranked 11 to 1

Division I College Football Conferences Ranked 11 to 1
John David Mercer-USA TODAY Sports

There are 11 conferences in Division-I college football. As usual, the cream rises to the top with the six BCS conferences taking up the top six spots on this list. However, the non-BCS conferences are really close in talent and only certain teams separate them from complete equality. The gap between BCS and non-BCS conferences is huge once again this year as this list will inform you of.

The SEC is once again right up there talent wise, but cannot lay claim to having the No. 1 spot on this list. Only two teams are undefeated in the SEC, but eight out of the 14 schools have four or more wins. In the Pac-12, exactly half of the teams have four or more wins. Only 40 percent of the Big 12 teams have four or more wins while seven out of 12 schools in the Big Ten can say they have that feat accomplished. 40 percent of the American Athletic conference has four or more wins too, but due to lack of talent, they bring up the rear of the BCS conferences.

The non-BCS conferences are tough to rank due to them all playing almost equally, but a few teams help sway their conferences over others. The fact that three teams in the Mid-American Conference have five wins puts them as the best non-BCS conference on this list. The fact that only three out of eight teams have a winning record in the Sun Belt makes them the worst conference in Division-I college football.

Now, let’s look at how they rank from 11-to-1 heading into Week 7.

UL Lafayette leads the way with a 3-2 record and 1-0 inside the conference. Arkansas State is also 1-0 in conference, but is only 2-3 overall.

ECU is 2-0 in conference and 4-1 overall. They currently lead the conference over Marshall who is 3-2 overall and 1-0 inside the conference.

Fresno State is running away with this conference. They're 2-0 inside the conference and 5-0 overall. There are a few teams in striking distance, but in the end, Fresno State should win this conference.

Independents

Although, technically this isn't a conference, there are some quality teams in the independents. Notre Dame and Old Dominion are both 4-2, but there are other quality teams like Navy who are 3-1 and BYU who has a 3-2 record, who are also in the independents.

Bowling Green, Ball State and Northern Illinois are all in the running for the conference championship. With records of 5-1 (3-0), 5-1 (2-0) and 5-0 (1-0), respectively, any of these three can end the season as Mid-American champion.

American Athletic

Yes, this is a BCS conference and yes, quite a few teams have 4-plus victories, but this conference is Louisville's to lose. It's the lack of talent inside the conference that may keep Teddy Bridgewater from winning this year's Heisman trophy.

The Sooners seem to be the cream of the crop in this conference. However, I wouldn't sleep on Baylor. The rest of the teams should all fall exactly where they should come the end of the season.

ACC

The U is 5-0 overall and 1-0 in conference. They are looking very good this year, but whoever win the Atlantic part of the ACC will likely win the conference. Clemson or Florida State should be standing tall at the end of the year.

Pac-12

There are three teams with a solid chance at winning the conference and USC isn't one of them. Although UCLA is playing amazing ball right now, it'll come down to Stanford and Oregon. The winner of their game will go on and win the conference.

SEC

This is the conference that has won the BCS National Championship the past seven years and once again they look strong this season. It's still early, so seven teams have a chance to win this conference if things fall right for those teams, but until they're dethroned, expect Alabama to walk away with the conference championship again this year.

Big Ten

Big Ten
Jerry Lai-USA TODAY Sports

The only conference with more depth currently than the SEC is the Big Ten. Every member of the Legends half of the conference have 4-plus wins, but Michigan leads the pack. Ohio State will run away with the Leaders half of the conference and will be the team standing tall at the end of the season in the Big Ten.
