ACC Previews and Predictions: Week 8

acc
Joshua S. Kelly-USA TODAY Sports

The ACC is one of the most top-heavy conferences in the nation this season and that is evidenced by the Miami Hurricanes, Florida State Seminoles and Clemson Tigers all ranked in the top 10 nationally.

Last week, only two of the conference’s four ranked teams took to the gridiron as Clemson and Miami both had byes. The Virginia Tech Hokies hosted the Pittsburgh Panthers, but won in a very ugly, close game. Many people are still not sold on the Hokies as a ranked team because the offense is so poor, but the defense is keeping them alive and in the conversation as one of the top teams in the conference.

Clemson also hosted a lesser opponent and had a surprisingly close game against the Boston College Eagles. Tajh Boyd and the Tigers looked as if they were looking past the Eagles and toward their big matchup with the Seminoles on Oct. 19 at home.

As I just stated, the Tigers are looking toward their matchup against the Seminoles in week eight. Everyone had this game marked on the calendar prior to the season beginning and now that it’s finally here, it will surely be one of the best games of the young season and the first matchup of top-five teams in the 2013 season.

Although the Clemson-Florida State game is the top game of the week, there is plenty of must-watch action in week eight.

Take a look at the previews and predictions for each week eight ACC game.

No. 10 Miami(FL) at North Carolina

miami
Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

Duke Johnson is still waiting for that breakout game and he could get it against a struggling North Carolina team. North Carolina has been awful this season and that's due, in large part, to the poor play of Bryn Renner. Expect Miami to roll.

PREDICTION: Miami 34, North Carolina 24

Syracuse at Georgia Tech

georgia tech
Jim Urquhart-USA TODAY Sports

Georgia Tech has dropped to 3-3 on the season after a week seven loss, but don't expect them to drop to 3-4 on the season as the run game will lead them past a mediocre Syracuse squad.

PREDICTION: Syracuse 17, Georgia Tech 30

Maryland at Wake Forest

Mitch Stringer-USA TODAY Sports

It wasn't too long ago that the Terrapins were blown out by the Seminoles, but Wake Forest is not the same caliber of team. Look for Maryland to bounce back and take out its frustration on the Demon Deacons.

PREDICTION: Maryland 31, Wake Forest 14

Duke at Virginia

virginia
Mitch Stringer-USA TODAY Sports

Virginia has had an awful season thus far, but a win against another struggling team will all but make up for the poor start in 2013. Too bad Duke is a better team in nearly every offensive and defensive category.

PREDICTION: Duke 27, Virginia 21

Old Dominion at Pittsburgh

Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports

Although Old Dominion is a solid FCS squad, don't look for them to take down a Pitt team looking for a blowout win against a lesser opponent.

PREDICTION: Old Dominion 13, Pitt 26

No. 5 Florida State at No. 3 Clemson

clemson
Melina Vastola-USA TODAY Sports

This will likely be the best game of the ACC season. Florida State will travel to Clemson to take on the Tigers in a prime-time matchup for the ages. Two of the top quarterbacks and offenses in the nation will be battling to see who can win the ACC title. Winner of the game sees their quarterback inch closer to a Heisman and team as a whole inch closer to a national title appearance.

PREDICTION: Florida State 34, Clemson 31
