Iowa vs. Ohio State: Game Preview With TV Schedule

Ohio State

Jerry Lai-USA TODAY Sports

As one of the top teams in the nation and a serious national title contender, the Ohio State Buckeyes haven’t lost a game in two years. In fact, the Buckeyes have won 18 straight regular season games thanks to the new head coach, Urban Meyer, who’s 18-0 as the head coach of this program.

A year ago, the Iowa Hawkeyes began the season with a 4-1 record a season ago and ended the season with seven straight losses and finishing with a 4-8 record. This season is starting to look just like that after a 4-1 record, the Hawkeyes have lost one more game after the hot start and wouldn’t be surprised if they finished close to the same 4-8 record from a season ago.

Ohio State is led by one of the top quarterbacks in the country and a guy who was considered a Heisman favorite prior to the season. Junior quarterback Braxton Miller has improved each year that he has been the quarterback of the Buckeyes and has been excelling ever since Meyer took over. While Miller missed some time earlier in the year due to injuries, he has still managed to pass for 609 yards and six touchdowns while completing over 65 percent of his passes. Don’t sleep on his dual-threat ability as he has 233 yards rushing as well. Carlos Hyde has been the star of the run game lately after missing the first three games of the year due to suspension. He has 294 rushing yards as well as three touchdowns.

Iowa has seen an improvement in quarterback play behind sophomore gunslinger Jake Rudock who has 1,202 yards and eight touchdowns this season. He has been a pleasant surprise for Kirk Ferentz and the Hawkeyes as they had been considered a primarily run-first type team. Ranking 33rd in the nation in rush yards per game after a tough 23 rushing-yard performance by the Hawkeyes against Michigan State in week six, Mark Weisman and Damon Bullock lead the way for this offense with a combined 880 yards and three touchdowns.

Defensively, the Hawkeyes allow just 16.8 points per game and just 290 yards per game — both of which rank in the top-20 in the nation. Ohio State ranks 24th in points allowed per game with 19.2 while ranking 15th in the nation in yards allowed per game with 326.2 yards per contest.

Iowa will travel to Ohio State to take on the Buckeyes at 3:30 p.m. EST on Saturday, Oct. 19. The game will be broadcasted on ABC and ESPN 2.

PREDICTION: Iowa 13, Ohio State 34
