Texas A&M’s Mike Evans is Hands Down the Best WR in College Football
Auburn knocked off Texas A&M, but lost in the defeat was another spectacular performance from redshirt sophomore wide receiver Mike Evans who was unstoppable for the Aggies. Evans entered this season as one of the top receivers in the SEC after a standout redshirt freshman season in 2012, but seven games into this season he is playing like the best in the entire nation.
Evans finished with career-highs across the board today with 11 receptions for 287 yards and four touchdowns vs. the Auburn secondary that had no answer for him all afternoon. This is the second game for Evans in the last five weeks with at least 279 yards receiving.
He has already eclipsed the five touchdowns he had a year ago and with every game continues to boost his NFL draft stock which was already pretty high. Mel Kiper recently updated his draft rankings by position and has Evans as No. 5, which is odd considering he began the season at No. 3.
Here is a snippet of what Kiper had to say about the 6-foot-5, 225-pound receiver:
“A big-time matchup problem, Evans has the length of an NFL tight end, and maybe even a bigger catch radius, because he has long arms on a 6-foot-5 frame … The question for Evans will be if he can show enough quick-twitch explosiveness and strength to beat jams and the straight-line speed to beat defenders over the top.”
With Johnny Manziel expected to declare for the NFL draft after this season, you can expect Evans to declare for the draft as well after two super-productive seasons in College Station. If I was a team drafting in the middle of the first round and needed a receiver, Evans would be my pick.
He is a matchup nightmare, a big play waiting to happen and after the show he put on vs. Auburn he is the toughest wide receiver to defend in the nation.
