Should Fresno State Bulldogs QB Derek Carr Be Considered In the Heisman Race?

By Trevor Lowry

The Fresno State Bulldogs are still undefeated and they have one of the best quarterbacks in the nation to go along with that. However, should Derek Carr be considered in the Heisman race?

Why not? He has thrown for 2,276 yards and 23 touchdown passes. He also only has four interceptions on the season. His stats could be that much better if the game against the Colorado Buffaloes was not postponed.

If you compare his stats to every other quarterback in college football, you will find that he is among the best of them. Carr has thrown for the second most touchdown passes and he is currently No. 6 in passing yards.

Although his stats are great, there is one major problem. Carr plays in the MWC. Fresno State is currently the only team ranked in the conference. It is No. 17 in the AP Poll and No. 19 in the Coaches Poll.

The Bulldogs have no ranked opponents on the schedule and that is probably not going to change until bowl season. Still, Fresno State is clearly a great team and Carr is an amazing QB.

At the very least, though, Carr should be in the talks for the Heisman. I highly doubt that he will win the trophy this season, but he is still putting up great numbers.

Carr had another great performance and threw for 412 yards and four touchdown passes this weekend against UNLV. Heisman or not, Carr and the Fresno State Bulldogs are having a great season and they should land in a pretty good bowl game–assuming they do not slip up.
