Baylor Bears Ranked Too High In Initial BCS Poll
The first BCS Poll of the season was released Monday, and the Baylor Bears came in at No. 6, a ranking that for the moment, seems a little too high.
Easy now, Baylor fans.
This isn’t a column designed to take a shot at Baylor’s offense, or the Bears’ potential to go undefeated, win the Big 12, and have an outside shot at the BCS National Championship. The potential for this scenario coming true increases every week, with every demoralizing whipping of their opponent.
Instead, we just need to look at who Baylor has played to this point to find that this offense, as high powered as it is, and this defense, as improved as it seems to be, has been playing against less than average competition through the first half of the season.
Baylor’s wins so far have come against Wofford, Buffalo, Louisiana Monroe, West Virginia, Kansas State and Iowa State. Those six teams have combined for a 19-21 record this season. Of the five FBS teams Baylor has faced, only one (Buffalo) has a winning record. Those five FBS teams also average out to have the 76th best defense in the country, with the best being Buffalo at 42nd and the worst being Iowa State at 112th.
On the opposite side of the ball, Baylor’s five FBS opponents average out to have the 84th ranked offense in the country, with the best being Kansas State at 63rd, and the worst being Louisiana Monroe at 115th.
The Bears will have the chance to prove that they’re for real in the upcoming weeks, as they face off against Oklahoma, Texas Tech and Oklahoma State all in a row, following the Kansas game and a bye week.
There’s no denying that Baylor is a very good team, and possibly the best team in the Big 12. However, before we lump them in with the best teams in the country, let’s see them play a few tough opponents.
