Ohio State Buckeyes’ BCS Ranking is No Surprise

By Jenna Aquino

The first BCS rankings came out on Sunday, and there are some surprises. The ranking of the Ohio State Buckeyes is one that does not come with much surprise at all.

The Buckeyes are No. 4 in the BCS rankings. They are currently No. 4 in the other polls as well and have been in that same spot for quite a while.

Many fans may have thought that the Buckeyes would get a less favorable ranking because of the fact that they are in the Big Ten. The Big Ten is known as a weak conference because of the quality of competition in the conference every season. The conference does not normally have multiple ranked teams like the SEC, Pac-12, and ACC seem to have. The other conferences seem to have more equal competition, resulting in a higher strength of schedule, which can really help a team out when it comes to the BCS rankings.

Right now the Big Ten has four ranked teams in the AP Top 25. The Buckeyes are of course, but also the Wisconsin Badgers, Michigan Wolverines, and Nebraska Cornhuskers are ranked currently. The Badgers are at No. 22, the Wolverines at No. 24, and the Cornhuskers at No. 25. The Badgers were left out of the BCS rankings, but the Wolverines are at No. 22 and the Cornhuskers are at No. 24.

Ohio State could easily get overlooked in the BCS because of their weak schedule. The teams ahead of them in the BCS rankings are the Alabama Crimson Tide, Florida State Seminoles, and Oregon Ducks. Florida State seems to be one of the bigger surprises as they jumped Oregon to take the No. 2 spot in the BCS after their dominating performance over the then No. 3 Clemson Tigers on Saturday.

At least two out of the top three BCS teams would have to lose at some point and the Buckeyes would have to go undefeated to have a chance at the BCS National Championship. Even then, they could be overlooked because of their weak schedule, and there is a possibility that they could finish behind a one-loss team from one of the stronger conferences.

The Buckeyes are going to have to hope that the Big Ten teams on their schedule finish each of their seasons strong so that they can boost their strength of schedule.

There is still a lot of football to be played though, and anything can happen. We’ll just have to wait and see what the rest of the college football season brings.
