The Auburn Tigers are starting to look like the team they were three years ago when they won the national title. Jumping in the rankings from a week ago, the Tigers now sit at No. 11 in the nation and are playing the best football they have played since that season in which Cam Newton led them to a title.
On the other side of the field, the Florida Atlantic Owls are just 2-5 on the season with seemingly no chance of winning a conference title. The Owls have played just one team that ended up being ranked this season — the Miami Hurricanes — and got clobbered by four touchdowns.
Auburn is 6-1 at the just-over-halfway mark on the season thanks to junior quarterback Nick Marshall who has 1,138 yards and six touchdowns through the air in six games while also rushing for 388 yards and four touchdowns. He has turned this team back into a winner and it looks like the run game is helping out mightily. Tre Mason has 693 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground while Cameron Artis-Payne has 417 yards and four touchdowns on the ground for the eighth-ranked rushing attack in the nation.
Florida Atlantic is not particularly impressive in any category on offense, but the Owls have a decent run game behind Jonathan Wallace who has 493 yards and three touchdowns for the 72nd-ranked run offense in the nation. The pass game is even less productive as sophomore quarterback Jaquez Johnson has just 1,050 yards and six touchdowns for the Owls on a 60 percent completion rate. He also has over 300 yards rushing as well as five touchdowns on the ground.
Defensively, the Owls rank 55th in the nation in points allowed per game while also ranking 23rd in the nation in yards allowed per game — pretty solid for a team who is just 2-5 on the year. Auburn ranks 32nd in points allowed per game while ranking an unimpressive 104th in yards allowed per game, giving up over 470 per contest.
Florida Atlantic will travel to Auburn to take on the Tigers at 7:30 p.m. EST on Saturday, Oct. 26. The game will be broadcasted on ESPN 3.
