Last Saturday, Johnny Manziel, quarterback for the Texas A&M Aggies, suffered a shoulder injury in a loss to the Auburn Tigers. Manziel left the game, although he did return later in the contest.
The injury seemed to be more severe than many thought when, earlier this week, the defending Heisman Trophy winner was reportedly in a sling and missed practice. This led to speculation that Manziel might not play in Saturday’s game against the Vanderbilt Commodores.
That speculation was dead wrong. Not only did Manziel play, he played very well, leading the Aggies to a 56-24 win over the Commodores at Kyle Field in College Station. Manziel had 305 yards passing in the game, although he only rushed for 11 yards. Manziel had a huge first half in the Southeastern Conference victory, throwing for 242 of his passing yards and three of his four touchdowns.
Manziel created a lot of ill will in the offseason, with his off the field antics. It seemed that he was in the headlines nearly each week for one reason or another. But once Manziel has gotten back on the field, most of that talk has subsided. In fact, it’s pretty safe to assume that Manziel made some fans on Saturday with his show of toughness.
The redshirt sophomore is, once again, one of the most exciting players in college football, and he will have a chance at winning a second straight Heisman. His performance on Saturday likely earned him a few more Heisman votes.
