Rant Sports Week 10 Official College Football Top 25 Rankings
Rant Sports College Football Top 25: Week 10
Week nine of the college football season has come and passed and it's starting to look like BCS favorites are taking the mold of top teams in the nation. It's no surprise that the top four teams in the nation remain unchanged once again as they just keep winning.
While the top four teams remain unchanged, it looks like the college football season keeps surprising people. Four teams who are in the Associated Press top 25 this week began the season as an unranked team. Seven of the top 20 teams in the nation weren't ranked at the start of the season and 10 total ranked teams have fought their way into the rankings since week one.
There are a couple new teams in the top 25 this week as the Notre Dame Fighting Irish keep impressing people even though they have two losses and the Michigan State Spartans took to the road and destroyed the Illinois Fighting Illini by a score of 42-3, winning their seventh game of the year.
The Alabama Crimson Tide demolished the Tennessee Volunteers at home and the Oregon Ducks beat a tough UCLA Bruins team by four touchdowns, 42-14, at home. The Ducks may be the clear second-best team in the nation right now, but don't be surprised if they get some No. 1 votes for the rest of the season.
The Ohio State Buckeyes were in no danger of losing to the Penn State Nittany Lions as they won by a ridiculous score of 63-14. The Florida State Seminoles were also in no danger of dropping their first tally in the "L" column as they did as they always do, and beat down another opponent by multiple scores.
Game of the week honors have to go to the Missouri Tigers against the South Carolina Gamecocks. The two teams went into overtime at Missouri and the Gamecocks won on a missed field goal by the Tigers.
Take a look at the Rant Sports official top 25 rankings as voted on by our group of experts.
25. Michigan Wolverines (6-1)
Michigan is last in our rankings, but a big win against Michigan State this weekend will surely change that.
Last week: 24
24. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (6-2)
Notre Dame just beat up on a lesser Air Force team, launching it back into the rankings. It will be interesting to see if they can stay in the top-25 this time.
Last week: NR
23. Michigan State Spartans (7-1)
Michigan State beat up on Illinois as the Spartans hit the road. It was a 42-3 bashing that finally convinced voters to put this 7-1 team in the rankings.
Last week: NR
22. UCF Knights (6-1)
Central Florida continues to impress as they defeated Connecticut by a wide margin. If this team keeps it up, it can dethrone the Louisville Cardinals from their preseason conference title assumption.
Last week: NR
21. Wisconsin Badgers (5-2)
The Badgers could be one of the dark-horse contenders to win the Big Ten title and steal it away from Ohio State, but they will need to win out for that to happen. Melvin Gordon remains a Heisman-contender at running back, however.
Last week: 23
20. UCLA Bruins (5-2)
The Bruins traveled to Oregon just to get knocked out, like all teams do, by the Oregon Ducks. However, a 42-14 loss isn't enough to drop the Bruins from the rankings.
Last week: 12
19. Northern Illinois Huskies (8-0)
If Northern Illinois keeps on winning, it will be knocking on the door of the BCS. Don't be surprised if the Huskies are this year's BCS cinderella.
Last week: 19
18. Fresno State Bulldogs (7-0)
Just like Northern Illinois, the Fresno State Bulldogs could surprise some people in the BCS this season. Fresno State is 7-0 and it looks like no one can take them down -- no matter how close the games are.
Last week: 15
17. Louisville Cardinals (7-1)
Louisville bounced back big time to win their week nine matchup by three touchdowns. Teddy Bridgewater will need to keep playing to the best of his abilities if this team wants to be back in a BCS bout.
Last week: 21
16. Oklahoma State Cowboys (6-1)
The Cowboys are creeping closer and closer to the top-10 after a blowout victory on the road of Iowa State. This team still has a great chance of winning the Big 12.
Last week: 20
15. Texas Tech Red Raiders (7-1)
Suffering their first loss of the season, the Red Raiders still look like one of the best teams in the Big 12. Winning on the road at Oklahoma isn't the easiest of tasks. Kliff Kingsbury has this team on the right track.
Last week: 10
14. South Carolina Gamecocks (6-2)
South Carolina came back to win a thriller on the road in the game of the week against the Missouri Tigers. Winning on the road is nice, but when you come back and win in overtime against the No. 5 team in the nation, you're bound to open some eyes.
Last week: 18
13. Auburn Tigers (7-1)
Auburn had absolutely no trouble with the Florida Atlantic Owls in week nine. They took down the Owls at home, but lost quarterback Nick Marshall in the process.
Last week: 14
12. Texas A&M Aggies (6-2)
Texas A&M took down the upset special of the week in Vanderbilt and it wasn't even close. Manziel threw for another four touchdowns -- no surprise there.
Last week: 13
11. Oklahoma Sooners (7-1)
The Oklahoma Sooners were the first team to defeat Texas Tech this season. That could be a building block toward a Big 12 title.
Last week: 17
10. Missouri Tigers (7-1)
Losing a heartbreaker at home in overtime because of a missed field goal has to hurt, but the Tigers have proven they are for real.
Last week: 6
9. Clemson Tigers (7-1)
A week after getting dismantled at home against a conference rival, the Tigers took down a tough Maryland team on the road. It might take winning out and some help from other conference teams in order to have a chance at an ACC title.
Last week: 9
8. LSU Tigers (7-2)
The Tigers have jumped back into the top 10 this week after the thumping they put on Furman. It wasn't close at any point, except for maybe when it was 0-0.
Last week: 11
7. Miami Hurricanes (7-0)
Miami has a huge game this week against the Florida State Seminoles. As a rivalry game, the Hurricanes will need to prepare to the best of their abilities as the performance they had against Wake Forest at home will not win them many games.
Last week: 7
6. Stanford Cardinal (7-1)
Stanford shook off an upset bid by the Oregon State Beavers on the road and won a close game. However, Kevin Hogan and the offense looked lost throughout the game. The defense played well, but the offense needs to wake up.
Last week: 8
5. Baylor Bears (7-0)
Baylor keeps proving that it is a legitimate top-10 team and for the second-straight week it finds itself in the top-five. Bryce Petty and Lache Seastrunk combine for a scary duo for the Bears as they keep on winning.
Last week: 5
4. Ohio State Buckeyes (8-0)
I don't think anyone saw the blowout coming that the Buckeyes had against Penn State. Winning 63-14 against a solid Big Ten foe is a good way to prove that you are the best team in the conference -- by far.
Last week: 4
3. Florida State Seminoles (7-0)
Florida State, to no ones surprise, blew out yet another opponent. If the two teams ahead of them in the rankings keep winning, it could be a tough pill to swallow by missing out on the BCS title game.
Last week: 3
2. Oregon Ducks (8-0)
Oregon, like the rest of the top four teams this week, took down its opponent in impressive fashion. The Ducks beat UCLA by four touchdowns and have made a great case for the top spot in the nation.
Last week: 2
1. Alabama Crimson Tide (8-0)
Anyone surprised? Didn't think so. The Tide prove to be the best team in the nation week after week and a blowout victory over Tennessee will help that.
