Ohio State Buckeyes Will Need Help Getting to National Championship Game

The Ohio State Buckeyes sure made a statement on Saturday as they dominated fellow Big Ten foe, the Penn State Nittany Lions in a 63-14 win.

The Buckeyes will need more than just impressive wins over the other Big Ten teams the rest of the season in order to make it to the BCS National Championship game.

Their statement win over the Nittany Lions did not move them in the polls at all, though they proved that they are a championship-caliber team. The Buckeyes are still No. 4 in the BCS behind the Alabama Crimson Tide, Oregon Ducks, and Florida State Seminoles.

One thing this win over Penn State did do for them in the BCS rankings was cut the margin down between them and the third-ranked team, which is Florida State this week. Oregon jumped Florida State to reclaim their No. 2 spot. Last week the margin between Ohio State and the then third-ranked Oregon was .0767, but now the margin between Ohio State and Florida State is just .0381.

At least it helped the Buckeyes a little bit.

The weakness of the Big Ten is going to hurt them when it comes to moving up in the BCS rankings.

The only way the Buckeyes are going to move up is with some help from the teams ranked above them in the BCS. At least two out of the top three need to lose to give the Buckeyes a chance to get to the national title game. Even then it is no guarantee.

The Buckeyes need to stay undefeated, continue to get impressive wins over fellow Big Ten teams, and hope that Alabama, Oregon, or Florida State get knocked off before the end of the season.

There is still a lot of football to be played, and we’ll just have to wait and see what the rest of the college football season brings.
