Former Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o has moved onto the NFL, so this year we are guaranteed to have a new winner of the Maxwell Award. 16 players this week were announced to the list of semifinalists for the Maxwell Football Club’s award to the collegiate player of the year.

The list includes 10 quarterbacks, four running backs and two wide receivers. Players from each of the BCS-automatic qualifying conferences are represented, with the Pac-12 having the most at five. Schools that have two players on the list are Baylor, Texas A&M and Oregon State.

There is also one player on the list from the Mountain West Conference. The list contains four seniors, seven juniors, four sophomores and a freshman.

In about four weeks, that list of 16 will get cut down to three finalists by the members of the Maxwell Football Club, NCAA football coaches, selected members of the media and sports information directors from schools across the country. Until Nov. 25, those who have a vote will be watching the games of these 16 players and combining that with their entire season’s resume to narrow the contention for the Maxwell Trophy down to three players.

There are five players who have already done enough to make excluding them from that list of three finalists a very difficult decision. If they can continue to perform at the level they have shown they are capable of, they will make the task of choosing just three of them an unenviable one.
