BCS Rankings: Florida State Seminoles Earn No. 2 Spot for Now

By Tyler Brett

The Florida State Seminoles looked incredibly impressive dispatching the Miami Hurricanes on Saturday with a 41-14 blowout sparked with a strong second half. There was no doubt who was the better team on the field on that night in Doak Campbell Stadium as the Noles made sure to erase any doubt. Their performance was rewarded with move up to No. 2 in the latest BCS rankings ahead of the idle Oregon Ducks but can FSU hold on to the spot until the end of the season?

This isn’t the first time that FSU has come out ahead of Oregon the BCS rankings, of course. After they dominated the Clemson Tigers earlier this season, Florida State started at No. 2 in the initial BCS rankings just ahead of the Ducks. After Oregon dominated the UCLA Bruins, however, the Noles got jumped the very next week. Now, they’ve returned the favor with an impressive win over Miami as Oregon watches during their bye week.

But unfortunately for FSU, this turn at No. 2 might be just as short as the last one. Next week, Oregon takes on the No. 5 Stanford Cardinal in a Thursday night showdown. If they win that game, that will be more than enough to make up the minuscule .009 lead of the Noles heading into next week. Unfortunately for Jimbo Fisher and Jameis Winston, no matter how impressive they are next week against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, it won’t be as impressive as an Oregon win against Stanford.

So through no fault of their own, Florida State appears doomed to let the No. 2 spot in the BCS rankings slip through their fingers once again unless Stanford does them a huge favor and knocks off Oregon on Thursday. Outside of a Cardinal win, FSU’s reign as the No. 2 team in the country with a spot in the BCS National Championship game will be short-lived.
