BCS Rankings: Oklahoma State Cowboys Still Have Opportunity to Move Up

By Tyler Brett

The Oklahoma State Cowboys might be one of the hottest one-loss teams in all of college football after back-to-back wins in which they scored a combined 110 points. Despite that strong couple of weeks, however, the Cowboys are still stuck deep down the BCS rankings at No. 14. With time running out on the 2013 season, can Oklahoma State make up ground and get into the BCS conversation?

With their remaining schedule, they’ll definitely have the opportunity. After a cupcake game against the Kansas Jayhawks, OSU finishes the season with a road trip to face the Texas Longhorns before a two-game home-stand against the No. 6 Baylor Bears and No. 10 Oklahoma Sooners. Depending on how strong Baylor and Oklahoma play over the next few weeks could make for some huge wins for Oklahoma State to close out the season.

Right now, the Cowboys are right in the mix for the Big 12 title after handily dispatching the Texas Tech Red Raiders last weekend. In years past, that would have carried quite a bit more weight than it has in 2013 but the general sense of weakness out of the conference has held Big 12 teams back this season in the rankings. If the Cowboys stay on track and win out, they’ll secure the automatic BCS bid for themselves for the conference and with some luck (and impressive wins over two BCS top-10 opponents) they could be in the mix for even more.

There are a lot of dominos that would have to fall for Oklahoma State to have a shot at getting into the BCS National Championship but crazier things have happened in college football. With a month left in the season, who knows how the top teams will fare against some legitimate tests down the stretch? Oklahoma State has as much of a case as any one-loss team out of BCS conference, especially if they’ve truly found their offensive rhythm. Can they make a late push?
