Despite Bye Week, Ohio State Could Gain Some Ground in the BCS
There are a few things that need to happen during the Ohio State Buckeyes’ bye week this week in order for them to gain some ground in the BCS rankings.
Even then, it is no guarantee. They could stay right where they are at No. 4. We’ll just have to wait and see how this weekend unfolds and how much the computers favor them to move up.
Two of the matchups that could help the Buckeyes take place on Thursday night.
The first matchup is the No. 10 Oklahoma Sooners taking on the No. 6 Baylor Bears. The undefeated Bears have not gotten any love from the computers in the BCS rankings. Even the one-loss Stanford Cardinal are ranked ahead of them in the BCS at No. 5. A win for Baylor means they could potentially start jumping teams ahead of them in the BCS, which includes Ohio State, but a Baylor loss could erase the Bears’ title hopes.
The second matchup is the No. 3 Oregon Ducks taking on No. 5 Stanford. This matchup has some major implications with Oregon still undefeated, and they cannot afford to lose a game. Stanford has already lost once, and another loss would keep them out of the title picture. A loss by Oregon could give the Buckeyes a good chance to move up since they are ahead of them at No. 3, but it all depends on the computers.
The other matchup is on Saturday night between the No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide and the No. 13 LSU Tigers. This SEC battle will prove whether or not Alabama is capable of playing for yet another national title. All eyes will be on this game to see if LSU can knock off the No. 1 team in the nation and cause a major shakeup in the BCS. An Alabama loss could also give Ohio State a chance to move up.
It’ll be a great football weekend.
Losses by the teams above them in the BCS give Ohio State the best chance to move up. Their blowout wins the last two weeks over the Penn State Nittany Lions and Purdue Boilermakers have hardly done anything for them in the BCS rankings. Two of the top three teams would have to lose for the Buckeyes to even have a shot at the title game, and that could potentially happen this weekend.
All Ohio State has to do is watch and wait to see what happens.
