Johnny Manziel Deserves Heisman, Another Monster Performance

Johnny “Football” Manziel strikes again. Manziel’s latest victim was Mississippi State as he torched the Bull Dogs for 446 passing yards, five touchdown passes, and ran for 47 more in a Texas A&M blowout win. Another brilliant performance for the sophomore quarterback.

Manziel deserves to be the first college football player to win back to back Heisman awards since the great Archie Griffin. Granted, his team has suffered two losses, but they have been zero percent his fault. Right now Manziel is carrying a defense that is ranked near the bottom of college football. It’s simply been an awful unit this year.

Yet, Manziel has guided this squad to eight wins and is statistically blowing away his Heisman campaign of last year. He does however, have two things going against him. One, the two losses as I mentioned earlier. Second, are “activities” off of the field. Between his party-boy lifestyle, and the scandal in which he has been involved (it includes allegedly signing autographs for money), he has a lot working against him.

The voting committee may hold this against him when it comes to giving out the prestigious honor and that would be a true shame. Manziel is playing extremely well right now. While true freshman Jameis Winston’s team has been more successful and he is having a great year in his own right, Manziel’s statistics and play on the field in the vaunted SEC no less has simply been on another level.

It is simple. Manziel deserves to be the first player in many decades to win back-to-back Heisman awards. However, I think he has a lot going against him. In the end he may just fall short because of things that have nothing to do with his play on the field.
