BCS Standings: Fresno State Bulldogs Still On Track to Bust BCS

Troy Babbitt – USA TODAY Sports

Last week, the Fresno State Bulldogs became eligible for a BCS bowl game as the No. 16 team in the BCS standings ahead of the Central Florida Knights who lead the AAC for their automatic bid to the BCS. After handling business on the road against the Wyoming Cowboys with a strong showing this week, the Bulldogs remain on track to bust the BCS and now sit at No. 14 in the latest rankings. Can they finish strong and seal the deal?

The Bulldogs head into a bye this week before finishing the regular season at home against the New Mexico Lobos (3-6) before a road game against the San Jose State Spartans (5-4) leading into the Mountain West Conference title game. There, they will likely face off against the Boise State Broncos or Utah State Aggies with a chance to finish off a perfect regular season.

If they keep winning, they’ll more than likely remain the highest ranked non-BCS program ahead of the Northern Illinois Huskies at No. 15 as the representative of the “little guys” in the big bowl games at season’s end. Central Florida remains in control of the AAC title race and trail Fresno State in the BCS standings, though the Bulldogs could push their way up to No. 12 or higher and earn an automatic berth into a BCS game either way.

For now, the Bulldogs are carrying the banner for the non-automatic qualifiers into the home stretch of the season. Can they finish what they’ve started and bust the BCS in 2013 and represent for the non-power conferences heading into the college football playoff next season?
