Big Ten Standings Update

something
Pat Lovell-USA TODAY Sports

This Saturday features games in the Big Ten that could finalize who plays for the conference championship in Lucas Oil Stadium. The winner of that game will be assured of a BCS bowl game spot.

The Ohio State Buckeyes could possibly use that game as a springboard to the BCS National Championship Game if they can run the table and get some help. If they don’t get it, they will certainly put themselves in the Rose Bowl against the Pac-12 champion with a win.

Before Ohio State or any other team can start preparing for a conference championship game, though, they have games to play this week. The scenarios for this week include one team that has a chance to wrap up a division title and three teams that need the games to play out in a certain way to stay alive in their respective divisional races.

Being eliminated from contention for a division title may be a disappointment for some teams, but it by no means signifies an end to the season. These teams can still find themselves in a bowl game and put together a successful year in that way.

Only two out of the Big Ten’s 12 teams can make it to Indianapolis at the end of the season and only one can advance from there as the Big Ten champion. For that team, whoever it ends up being, winning their game this weekend will be a big step toward that accomplishment.

Nebraska (7-2, 4-1) would be eliminated from Legends division contention if they lose to Michigan State because they would be two games back of the Spartans with two games to play and Michigan State would have the tiebreaker.

Michigan State (8-1, 5-0) cannot clinch this week even if they win at Nebraska because Minnesota is idle. If the Spartans do win, they will have a chance to wrap up the Legends division next week.
