Very few things can reinvigorate a Heisman Trophy candidacy more than an outstanding performance on national television against a conference rival. Clemson Tigers quarterback Tajh Boyd accomplished that very feat on Thursday night against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. The senior led his team to a 55-31 victory with 341 yards passing, 42 yards rushing and five total touchdowns.

Clemson has now won three consecutive games. Boyd has put together solid efforts in each of them and led the Tigers to a top 10 ranking with their 9-1 record. Over this recent stretch, the senior QB has completed 75 percent of his pass attempts while averaging 340 yards per game through the air. That is quite a rebound from the very poor outing he recorded in the team’s only loss of the season to Florida State a few weeks back.

Boyd’s overall statistics for the year really provide the evidence that should firmly place him on the short list of Heisman front-runners. He currently has just under 3,000 passing yards and 24 TD tosses compared to just seven interceptions. The resume becomes even more impressive when his 66.7 percent completion rate and seven rushing touchdowns are added to the numbers.

If the production remains at this level over the next couple of games, Boyd should definitely receive an invite to New York City for the Heisman Ceremony on Dec. 14 along with the other finalists for the award. Clemson ends their regular season schedule by taking on Citadel and arch-rival South Carolina.
